The relationship between a woman and her clothing tends to become more specific — and more interesting — after 40. The decade of trying everything to find what works gives way to knowing what works. The wardrobe of quantity and experiment gives way to a wardrobe of fewer, more deliberate pieces. The question shifts from "what is fashionable" to "what is right for me."

There is a specific category of garment that does more than its weight in a wardrobe — that elevates what it's worn with rather than simply occupying its own position in it. For women, the silk shirt is that garment. Under a tailored jacket it reads as polished and precise. Over tailored trousers on its own it reads as effortless and confident. With a pair of well-cut jeans it bridges the gap between casual and dressed.

Black tie is a dress code with one widely understood option for women — the gown — and several other valid options that are less frequently taken. The gown is not required. It is not even always the best choice. For women who are more comfortable in tailored clothing than in floor-length dresses, and who dress with enough knowledge to understand that tailored formal wear is not only acceptable but excellent, black tie is a context that accommodates their preferences fully.

The coat is the garment that most exposes the consequences of poor fit — because it is worn over everything else, because it is the first thing visible, and because it is the thing a person arrives in. A coat that fits badly announces its inadequacy immediately, regardless of what is underneath it.
