A rooftop wedding in New York is its own category of occasion. The setting is dramatic — the skyline, the open air, the sense of the city as backdrop — but it comes with practical complications that a hotel ballroom doesn't: wind, temperature variation, uneven surfaces, the difference between a warm afternoon and a cool evening once the sun drops. Dressing for a rooftop wedding means solving for all of it.

A garden wedding is one of the most pleasant occasions on the social calendar and one of the most challenging to dress for. The setting is beautiful and specific — outdoor, natural, often warm, sometimes unpredictably weather-dependent. The dress code signals relaxed elegance rather than formal ceremony. The challenge is hitting the register that looks luxurious and considered while remaining appropriate for a setting that doesn't accommodate stilettos in grass or a heavy wool suit in July.

Daytime weddings have their own dress code logic, and it's different from what applies in the evening. The formality ceiling is lower — black tie is almost never appropriate before 6pm — but the requirement to dress well is no less real. Getting daytime wedding attire right means understanding where on the formality spectrum the specific event sits, and choosing fabric, color, and silhouette that match the setting.

A gala is different from a wedding and different from a regular black tie event. It exists on a spectrum from the highly theatrical — the Met Gala, major museum openings, film industry parties — to the civic and charitable: the hospital benefit, the art museum annual, the university fund drive. The dress code for each is nominally similar but the sensibility required is not. Getting it right means reading the specific event, not just the two words on the invitation.
